In My Mailbox (9)

In My Mailbox by The Story Siren
In my mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi over at The Story Siren in which you share the books you added to your collection in the past week.
Hi friends!  This week I rocked free books with the library, and a book so old Kindle gives it away.  As always, clicky for GoodReads, and let me know what you got in your mailbox this week!

Audiobook cover of Linger by Maggie Stiefvater
Audiobook:
Linger - Maggi Stiefvater

I listened to the first hour or so of Linger, enough to get at least 1-2 chapters from each perspective.  It really wasn't grabbing me the way Shiver did.  So I'm thinking either it's just the wrong time for me and this book, or that four different narrators is just too much for me.  Setting this one aside, maybe I'll return to it at some point.

Audiobook cover of Princess Academy of Shanon Hale
Audiobook:
Princess Academy - Shannon Hale

I recently read both of Shannon Hale's works for adults, Austenland and Midnight in Austenland.  I recognize that this is an odd place to start with Hale, since she's primarily a MG author, so I decided it was high time to check out some of her MG!  I picked up Princess Academy after determining Linger wasn't going to do it for me.  It's been pushing out of my comfort zone as a book with different narrators for the character's dialog, but I'm persevering and the story is really good!
Book cover of Fallen in Love by Lauren Kate
Fallen in Love - Lauren Kate

As a fan of short stories, I was excited when my number came up for this one on the wait list at the library.  Yes, Fallen is totes my guilty pleasure series.  I can't put them down, and am pretty excited for Rapture to finish the series up.  I probably won't be talking about any of these stories on the blog as it's too far into the series.  Looking forward to some reading without review obligations hanging over my head!

Book cover of Persuasion by Jane Austen
Persuasion - Jane Austen

It occurred to me after Hale's modern takes on Austen, and reading Angie's review of the much anticipated For Darkness Shows the Stars, that it has been way too long since I read any Austen.  Probably 10 years or so.  That makes it time to revisit some classics that I'll probably appreciate more as a grown ass woman than I did as a teen.  So I picked up Persuasion on my Kindle since my physical copies are back in the parent's house.  It's free!

  1. You should check out The Goose Girl sometime, it's really very good. I do love the cover of Princess Academy (I have it too but with a different cover, I think).

    Happy reading :-)

  2. I second The Goose Girl plug. It's my favorite Shannon Hale book, although Princess Academy is wonderful, too!
I hope you give Linger another shot soon! It was very good! I have a hard time with audiobooks in general, but I've tried to read some that have different narrators for each character and, I don't know, I feel like it confused me or something. Maybe reading it would be better?

  3. I've read Fallen and Torment and I liked them, but didn't love. I haven't gotten to Passion yet, though. I hope you like Fallen in Love! :) As for Linger, I won't lie - I read and loved Shiver, but trying to read Linger - I got like 70 pages into it and then picked up another book. It was good, but it just didn't grab me. Hope you give it it another shot at some point, though!

  4. I had no idea there were so many haters of the Fallen series out there. I really enjoyed the first two. The third was okay, but not my favorite. I'm looking forward to Rapture too :]
I really loved both Shiver and Linger, but Forever wasn't my favorite:[

  6. Heidi, Shiver is one of my favorite books of all time, but having read all three books, I wish it had been a standalone. Linger was not bad but I was very disappointed in Forever, so...if you aren't feeling it, I guess all I'm saying is it may not be the worst thing in the world if you don't continue, hah.

I think rereading Persuasion is actually a good idea before Stars. I'm not sure I'll have the time, but it doesn't hurt to try!

  7. I LOVE LOVE LOVED The Wolves of Mercy Falls series! I loved them, and I love Maggie Stiefvater's writing style; she's amazing! The last books in the series (Forever), will BLOW your mind(:
I really need to read the Fallen series, the first book has been sitting in my shelf for over a year, and I still haven't read it yet.
    Enjoy your books!
