Monstrous Beauty - Elizabeth Fama
[Amazon|GoodReads]
Fierce, seductive mermaid Syrenka falls in love with Ezra, a young naturalist. When she abandons her life underwater for a chance at happiness on land, she is unaware that this decision comes with horrific and deadly consequences. Almost one hundred forty years later, seventeen-year-old Hester meets a mysterious stranger named Ezra and feels overwhelmingly, inexplicably drawn to him. For generations, love has resulted in death for the women in her family. Is it an undiagnosed genetic defect . . . or a curse? With Ezra’s help, Hester investigates her family’s strange, sad history. The answers she seeks are waiting in the graveyard, the crypt, and at the bottom of the ocean—but powerful forces will do anything to keep her from uncovering her connection to Syrenka and to the tragedy of so long ago.

Magic Burns - Ilona Andrews
[Amazon|GoodReads]
As a mercenary who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels has seen her share of occupational hazards. Normally, waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow across Atlanta like a tide. But once every seven years, a flare comes, a time when magic runs rampant. Now Kate's going to have to deal with problems on a much bigger scale: a divine one.
When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack, Atlanta's paramilitary clan of shapeshifters, she quickly realizes much more is at stake. During a flare, gods and goddesses can manifest-- and battle for power. The stolen maps are only the opening gambit in an epic tug-of-war between two gods hoping for rebirth. And if Kate can't stop the cataclysmic showdown, the city may not survive.
Kill Shakespeare Vol. 1 - Conor McCreery, Andy Belanger, Anthony Del Col
[Amazon|GoodReads]
What Fables does for fairy tales, Kill Shakespeare does with the greatest writer of all time. This dark take on the Bard pits his greatest heroes (Hamlet, Juliet, Othello Falstaff) against his most menacing villains (Richard III, Lady Macbeth, Iago) in an epic adventure to find and kill a reclusive wizard named William Shakespeare.I picked this one up because I love Fables and I'm a fan of Shakespeare. I haven't talked to anyone who's read it, or really heard anything about it, so hoping it's good!
That's it for me this week, what's in your mailbox?
Monstrous Beauty looks so awesome, I hope you like it because I have yet to find a mermaid-esque story that blew me out of the water (see what I did there??) Also how do I not own Kill Shakespeare?! I just got Gaiman's Sandman this week so I hope I love it!
ReplyDeleteYAY!! The fact that you're going to read Sandman has me so so excited. The first one has this really disturbing part, but don't let it put you off, the series is amazing. My favorite (in fact, I should reread it). Yeah I'm trying both Lies Beneath and Monstrous Beauty this year. I haven't read any mermaid books yet because I'm pretty hesitant for many of the same reasons that have kept me away from reading zombie romances.

ReplyDeleteI requested Monstrous Beauty from NetGalley but I haven't heard back from them so looks like I won't get approval for that. Let me know what you think when you get to read it!
ReplyDeleteYay for Kate Daniels, hope you enjoy reading the rest of the books.
It took me over a week to get approved for it, maybe they just haven't approved you yet? I'll let you know, it seems kind of dark and that appeals to me.
