Top Ten Tuesday: Books I'd Hand to Non-Readers

Top Ten Tuesday banner by The Broke and the BookishTop Ten Tuesday is a weakly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  They love lists as much as I do, so it's only fair to tip my hat.

This week we're talking about books we'd hand to someone who says they don't like to read.  Well, obviously, every reader (and non-reader) has different preferences, so I'm going to focus on the classic reluctant reader--teens!

For the shy kid:

Book cover of The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky Book cover of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
For Him: The Perks of Being a Wallflower - For Her: Speak

For the kid who loves the great outdoors:
Book cover of The Girls of No Return by Erin Saldin Book cover of Hatchet by Gary Paulson
For Her: The Girls of No Return - For Him: Hatchet

For the kid who likes Sci Fi:
Book cover of The Maze Runner by James Dashner Book cover of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
For Him: The Maze Runner - For Her: The Hunger Games

For the sporty kid:
Book cover of Catching Jordan by Miranda Kennealy Book cover of Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger
For Her: Catching Jordan - For Him: Friday Night Lights

For the kid that hesitates at all those words:
Book cover of The Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes by Neil Gaiman Book cover of Fables: Legends in Exile by Bill Willingham
For Him: The Sandman - For Her: Fables

I'm making myself stop there, though I could go on!  I mean...I didn't even get to mention Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter which are accessible to everyone.  Also note, just because I've made his and her suggestions in no way means that girls/boys won't read and love all of these books. Many readers just find it easier to identify with narrators that are the same sex, and we're looking for gateway reads after all!

  1. Color me embarrassed! I didn't know Friday Night Lights was a book! I've heard about the TV show, but we don't get it here in the UK. I'm SO checking this out because I loved Catching Jordan and even though I don't play sports I love sporty books and movies.

    1. The TV show was based on the movie which was based on the book! I honestly haven't read this one myself, but my brother-in-law had it over Christmas and really enjoyed it.

  2. Oh I love how you sectioned your list out! I haven't read all of these, but I am intrigued by a lot of them. More books to add to my TBR list!

  3. I love your list, especially how you focused on giving books to both boys and girls! I was trying to keep that in mind with mine but I think I definitely leaned towards girl reads haha. But you have some great picks! I've been meaning to read both Catching Jordan and The Maze Runner.

    1. Yeah, it's hard sometimes to make suggestions when I just want everyone to read what I read, which is largely more girly. The Maze Runner was awesome, and I haven't gotten to Catching Jordan either yet myself, but have heard only amazing things.

  4. Speak is such an awesome choice! I don't know why I didn't add it to my list. Also, I LOVE FNL the show. I might have to give the book a try one day. Great list!

    1. I never watched FNL, but I think I'd really like it. One of these days I'll have to burn through it! I loved Speak and think it'd speak (no pun intended) to a lot of teens.

  5. Oh yeah . . . Hunger Games! What a great story. I have a feeling that one will be on a lot of lists today.

    1. Probably...I feel like it makes a lot of lists somehow every week! For good reason though, it's awesome.

  6. What a great way to do your list. It's so hard making these lists because you always end up leaving out some good books. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is such an excellent book, I wish I would have had it on mine.

    1. I know! I had to really restrict myself this week especially, hence the categories to make me narrow it down a bit.

  7. Yes to all of these and great set up! I need to read The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Sandman ASAP. I am not a Gaiman fangirl yet, what is wrong with me!!

    1. YES YOU NEED TO READ SANDMAN!!! I've been resisting pushing it on you because I know you're not huge on graphic novels, but since you love Fables so much, I'm sure you'll love Sandman too. I'm a TOTAL Gaiman fangirl, as an author and a person--he's a huge library supporter!

  8. I love how you did your list. I have a 13 year old boy and I will be recommending The Maze Runner and The Sandman to him- thanks!

    1. Yay! Hope he likes them. Both of the books can be somewhat violent in places Sandman in particular..there's a fairly disturbing scene in the first book I might recommend more for older teens, so I don't know if you'd want to flip through them at all first. The Maze Runner was less violent than The Hunger Games though.

  9. Very interesting choices, a lot of these aren't familiar to me so I will have to look at them!

    1. Mine too! It was the first graphic novel series I ever read, and it's still my favorite.

  11. I absolutely love that you've listed Speak here. I contemplated adding that one to mine because I love the book so much, but I was hesitant because it is such a powerful story. I should've kept it on there, I suppose!

    1. I think a lot of non-readers sometimes need something powerful to really grab them, and Speak can do that without being too bulky and intimidating. =)

  12. I love the way you approached this! The different personality types and for him/for her - excellent idea!

You can read my list here :)

  13. I love the way you categorized this list, and also how you chose gender appropriate titles for boys and girls. That was a great idea! You have lots of great selections here that I have read, and a few that I'm adding to the perpetually growing TBR list.

  14. Oooh... love your format for this one...and I agree with all of your choices!

I just started The Girls of No Return today and am loving it so far. And how could I have left Hatchet off my own list? Perfect book for reluctant readers, especially boys...in fact, a favorite of my own reluctant reader.

    Great list!
